Lynchburg, VA – What would you do if you got locked in a car?

That’s what happened to ABC 13 Chief Photographer Jemon Haskins Sunday. Haskins was checking out a Chevrolet Corvette on a lot, when he got in and closed the door.

When he tried to get out, he realized he couldn’t get any of the locks to work.

In fact all the Corvettes made after 2005 have only electronic not mechanical locks.

So if you don’t know where the emergency latches are, there’s no getting in or out of that car when the battery dies.

Sleek, Elegant and fun to drive… It’s no wonder the Chevrolet Corvette is any man, or woman’s, dream car.

When Jemon Haskins saw a 2007 Corvette for sale at a used car lot he says he just had to get in. “I’ve been looking for a vehicle like this for awhile” said Haskins

The lot was closed, but the car was unlocked, so Haskins got in and closed the door. He never expected what would happen next.

“911 do you have an emergency” asked the 911 operator. “Yes ma’am, I’m stuck in a corvette right now the doors won’t open” responded Haskins.

Haskins says both the door handles and the buttons on the door panels wouldn’t work. “I tried tugging at it, pushing at it…nothing. So I tried going over here, seeing if this door would unlock…same thing wouldn’t open” said Haskins.

Haskins even tried opening the sunroof, but had no luck. With the temperature rising, he called 911, leaving the operator a little puzzled. “I mean is your door jammed or?” asked the 911 operator.

“No it’s got one of these electronic doors and it’s stuck it’s locked” said Haskins.

Haskins is not alone, We checked online and found several posts of people locked inside Corvettes. “I’ve heard this a few times. I’ve had some co-workers, some customers, and a few people get stuck in them” said Tom Mcdonough, Lynchburg Carmax General Manager.

When the battery dies in a Corvette, like this one, the electronic buttons on the door panel will no longer work, essentially, locking the person inside.

Mcdonough says the Corvette has two manual levers that can open the doors if someone is locked in or out. One located in the Trunk, the other under the driver’s seat.

Fortunately, Haskins got lucky, he says a man walking by heard him honking the horn and let him out.

“I jumped out and said phewww good gracious.. Fresh air” said Haskins.

We reached out to General Motors Corvette and Camaro product specialist, Monte Doran, who says they have heard of people getting locked inside Corvettes.

However, he says these incidents have been very rare. There is no recall for this.

Doran says GM encourages car dealers to warn buyers about the lock system and show them where the levers are located.

He also says owners should make sure to read the owners manuals.Lynchburg, VA – What would you do if you got locked in a car?
