Back in the day when I had drag cars, I said to a friend " I'm going to get me a Hemi".
Now anybody with half a brain knows that a 283, 4 barrel ,4 speed station wagon can't beat a Hemi Roadrunner , dual 4s, a 4speed and a 4.10 rearend. But I figured the guys in the stands only watch the launch and first part of the run anyway.
At this time in my life I was quick at the lights, so, I brought the Rs to 7200 and at the green I'm gone. The high Rs must have rattled the Hemi guy because he got the engine up a little and spun his 9 inch slicks giving his friends a good show (he was also slow on the lights). Now that we have the smoke show you may aswell turn the wheel a little to get that great fishtail effect (don't worry he has a Hemi).
So here I am rowing the 283 down the track with powershifts at 7200, as I'm going for 4th at the 1/8th mile mark I say to myself "where is he" . After the gear change I look back over my shoulder and he is way back.
Now after what seemed forever I'm going over the finish line ( this sucker is tight at the finish line, there aint no more !) and the Hemi comes by me like I have never been passed before. I swear if he had of had 2 inches more in drag strip length he would have got me.
Later in the pits as I'm cooling the mighty 283 down he came by and says "what-cha got in this thing" and I said "a 283", he promptly looked at the 283 with the cast iron intake and Rocester 4GC carb then looks inside the car to find a complete interior like in Grandma's satition wagon. He walked away shaking he head.
I don't think he had ever met up with an NHRA Legal Stocker before. :)
