The driver of a new Chevrolet Corvette passed a slower moving vehicle on a mountain road early Sunday morning but then lost control and rolled down a 100-foot embankment, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver, Robert Paul Dunlop, 39, of Northridge, suffered major injuries in the 5:35 a.m. crash on Highway 155 west of Alder Creek, officers said.

His passenger, Gary James Kerchner, 60, of San Jose suffered moderate injuries, officers said. Both were wearing seat belts and taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Officers said he was going east and passed the slower vehicle by crossing double yellow lines.

He was going about 20 mph behind the slower vehicle, sped up to more than 30 mph, but lost control at a curve as he went back into the east lane, officers said.
