For the first time in Corvette show history, a patriotic display on wheels –– 468 to be exact — appeared at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.

During the 2008 Corvettes at Carlisle show Friday, 117 red, white and blue ’vettes assembled in the shape of an American flag.

“We thought it would be a neat way of showing the patriotism that goes along with the American sports car,” explained Patrick Lemay, spokesman for Carlisle Events.

The idea for the display literally came to Lance Miller, senior director, in a dream, Lemay said.

“He had a dream of over 100 red, white and blue Corvettes,” Lemay said. Carlisle Events was able to gather more than 100 cars, which were parked on the field in the shape of a flag.

“People really responded to it,” Lemay said.

This year’s Corvette show celebrates 55 years of the American sports car. In addition to thousands of cars on site, the show includes an auto auction, giveaways and competitions.

One of the many cars on display is a black 2008 Corvette coupe being raffled off to benefit children with spina bifida. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold for the car. Tickets are numbered 100 through 999 and the winning ticket will correspond to the Pennsylvania Lottery daily number drawn at 7 p.m. Oct. 25.

The car will be presented to the winner during the American Legends at Long’s Park Corvette show Oct. 26 at Long’s Park in Lancaster.

The raffle is sponsored by the Lancaster County Corvette Club and Faulkner Chevrolet. Tickets are $80 each and may be purchased at the show or online at www.lcccpa.com.

Last year’s raffle netted $29,000 for spina bifida support.

“It’s used for local programs,” explained Patricia Fulvio, executive director of the Spina Bifida Association of Greater Pennsylvania. Fulvio said the money stays in Pennsylvania and helps provide assistance to families with spina bifida and helps fund educational programs, as well as some research expenses.

Corvettes at Carlisle continues through Sunday.
